Summary
UbuntuCommonHooker aims to provide an interface for unknown file extensions to automatically install a certain packages when it's called.
Rationale
New users will find it difficult to open a particular file, because there are no installed viewers for it.
Use cases
Eduard is a schizophrenic, however his only obession and a way to calm him down is listening to "Veronika Plays Piano, volume 1" which is encoded in MP3. Veronika is his friend who recently got a copy of Ubuntu Linux, and tried it on Eduard's computer. However, Eduard just find out that he can't play his MP3's.
Dr. Igor use ".rar" extension to compress his research, however, Villete decides to migrate to Ubuntu Linux. But when Dr. Igor tryies to open "Vitriol.rar, and Zedka.rar", it say's "Error cannot open file!"
Okonkwo tried Ubuntu Linux for the first time, however, when he tried to open "Wresting with Amalinze.mpg", he is prompted that "there are no codecs to view this file", However, Okonkwo's father Onuka had no problems opening .mpg files, but Okonkwo doesn't like to use Windows like his father did.

Design
The software will be linked to those particular file extensions, (e.g. Open With), and will have a gnome-settings-default-applications icon.

The software will determine a particular file by it's file extension, expected input is not case-sensitive, that means, .ZiP, .ZIP .zIP will automatically identified.

Needs a better label in the open with box....
Is it possible to create associations for all the file types if the dont exist thank brings up a "You need to instal XXXXXXXX to use this kind of file"
Then when installation is done the mime association to the "hooker" program could be removed leaving the new app as the default.....

This shouldn't be accessible from the "open with.." screen. If this is mainly for video codecs then this could be 'integrated' with totem.
You could use a startup script for totem which prechecks for the needed libraries.
I think it would be best if it was a stand-alone program called "Video Installer" or something. It could then be placed in the 'System Menu'.
You should make a synaptic replacement with 'difficulty modes'. You could then include this idea in it.

Hooker should determine the mimetype from the content (as does the program "file"), not by the extension.
It should not show in the "open with" menu, but should be integrated into the desktop system's mimetype functionality, so that if I try to open a file that has no assigned program, it automatically runs Hooker.

Absolutely loving the idea, but here's this:
1. What if you changed the name? Something called "Hooker' doesn't have a pleasant ring. It sounds sexual (i.e. prostitute).
2. What if a specific piece of software was recommended? It would then recommend installing it, and as soon as the software was installed, it would automatically play in the new software.
3. Change "view" to "play," because you can
t "view" audio files, you play them. But then again, you can't play document files, you open them. How about "open this file" instead?
You definitely have the right mind-set. Make sure you add your ideas to Ubuntu's forums under "3rd Party Ubuntu Projects."
